The United Nations in South Africa mourns the loss of Dr Ruth Mompati. One of the leaders of the historic Women’s March in 1956, Dr Mompati’s efforts to fight for equality will continue to be marked and celebrated on South Africa’s National Women’s Day.
In 1993 the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid held a commemorative meeting to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Struggle of Women in South Africa. Dr Mompati travelled to New York as part of the delegation and called for an end to the violence in South Africa and for greater participation by women in the political process.
Dr Mompati will be remembered not only for her role in the anti-apartheid struggle, but also as one of South Africa’s great women leaders. Deepest condolences to her family.
