The school principal, Ms. Tiny Beumpoa welcomed the UNIC team and introduced the agenda for the visit. UNIC Librarian, Hope Kabamba who was accompanied by Mr. Scotch Mabhena, Antoni Armache, IT Intern and Fhumulani Mudau, Library Intern, introduced the learners to the work of the United Nations followed by a short UN4U video. SDG icons were distributed among the learners to support the second video screened on the Sustainable Development Goals.

The screening of SDGs video paved the way for an interactive session with learners. Hope quizzed the learners about contemporary issues they identified in the video and also opened a discussion on how the successes of the SDGs may impact the Stanza Bopape community. Learners were fully engaged and those who gave detailed and correct answers were awarded with UN branded materials. One learner commented, “I hope the SGD’s will be taken more seriously by all member states to accomplish the targets set by 2030 as compared to MDGs. I want to be a community Development Officer one day so that I can help people.”

Stanza Bopape is situated in an informal settlement, like other townships in South Africa and is hardest hit by poverty. In addition to high levels of poverty and illiteracy, many heads of households in the community are unemployed resulting in children often missing school and lacking basic necessities to sustain them in life.
