Peacekeeping is cost effective, but must adapt to new reality

When I entered the United Nations Secretariat building for the first time as Secretary-General in January, my first act was to lay a wreath honoring more than 3,500 United Nations staff who died in the service of peace. Later that same week, two Blue Helmets were killed in the Central African Republic, where they were working to prevent violent confrontations between communities from descending into mass killings. United Nations peacekeepers place themselves in harm’s way every day, between armed groups that are trying to kill each other or to harm civilians.

UN in South Africa celebrates Africa Day with the Department of Science and Technology.

The United Nations in South Africa joined the Department of Science and Technology in celebrating Africa Day at the Freedom Park in Pretoria. The day is marked annually on 25 May to celebrate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now called the African Union) in 1963. The theme for this year was “Celebrating the advancement of science in Africa with specific emphasis on the role of data collection in tracking the Sustainable Development Goals for informing policies.”

— Two fallen peacekeepers from South Africa to be honoured at ceremony at UN Headquarters –

The United Nation Headquarters will observe the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Wednesday, 24 May.  Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will lay a wreath to honour all fallen peacekeepers and will preside over a ceremony at which the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal will be awarded posthumously to 117 military, police and civilian personnel who lost their lives while serving in peacekeeping operations during 2016.

Rwandan refugee resumes her profession as a nurse thanks to UNHCR scholarship programme

 

After fleeing Rwanda, Chantal Uwamahoro regained her nursing credentials in South Africa thanks to scholarship support from UNHCR and now is employed as a nurse in a public hospital in Durban. © UNHCR/Pumla Rulashe

Durban, South Africa –  Less than three years after reuniting with her husband in South Africa, following the political violence that forced their flight from Rwanda in 1999 and the subsequent disintegration of her family, 29 year old Chantal Uwamahoro was once again forced to bid him farewell but for the last time as he battled an illness that would eventually take his life.

Born a sheltered prince, Shakyamuni went out into the world to confront and overcome human suffering. As one sutra states, “Because all living beings are subject to illness, I am ill as well.”
