Pretoria, 19 July 2017- The UN in South Africa in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation celebrated Nelson Mandela International Day by brightening the smiles of the physically challenged and less fortunate students of the Adelaide Tambo School and the YMCA in Soweto, south of Johannesburg.
Pretoria, South Africa, 23 June 2017 – More than 30 senior primary school students from Pretoria, South Africa, participated in the #SaveOurOcean competition organized this month by the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in partnership with Greenpeace Africa, an advocacy group, in an effort to raise awareness about the current situation facing the world’s oceans.
The United Nations in South Africa joined the Department of Science and Technology in celebrating Africa Day at the Freedom Park in Pretoria. The day is marked annually on 25 May to celebrate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now called the African Union) in 1963. The theme for this year was “Celebrating the advancement of science in Africa with specific emphasis on the role of data collection in tracking the Sustainable Development Goals for informing policies.”
Pretoria – On Sunday the 26th March 2017, UNIC Pretoria in partnerships with UNICEF, Sony Pictures South Africa, Flow Communications and Ster Kinekor hosted a special screening on the Smurfs Movie called “The Lost Village” for learners and teachers of Kokosi Primary School in Johannesburg.
30 March 2017, Pretoria – UNIC Pretoria Library marked the National South African Library Week with a couple of activities in the UNIC Library with library users and learners from the Tshwane Leadership Foundation.
The United Nations declared 25 March as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, to remind people about the negative impacts and consequences of the slave trade.
The 29th November of each year is significantly observed as the UN international Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This follows the adoption of the resolution 181(II) by the General Assembly in 1947 partitioning Palestine into two states. That resolution provided for the establishment in Palestine of a “Jewish State” and an “Arab State”. Of the two States to be created under this resolution, only one, Israel, has so far come into being.
Bringing the SDGs to Children
UNIC Pretoria celebrated Universal Children’s Day on Tuesday, 22 November 2016, with children from the Tshwane Leadership Foundation (TLF) at the UNIC library in Pretoria. Activities were arranged for the children, aged between 6 and 12 years relating to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through various activities, students discussed their understanding of the SDGs and why it was important to be knowledgeable about the work of the UN with specific focus on the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda
UNIC Pretoria observed World Toilet Day on Friday, 18 November 2016, with a group of young dynamic library users at the UNIC library in Pretoria. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness on toilet hygiene and sanitation in relations to Goal 6 of the SDG’s which calls for increased access to clean water and sanitation worldwide.
