The United Nations in Pretoria recently concluded a successful programme of educational outreach to nearly 900 students in ten schools around the country. The UN4U is a week-long programme commemorated by UN Information Centres globally, prior to UN Day on 24th October. Staff members including senior officials speak at local schools to share their different information about their programmes as well as about the UN work in peace keeping, tackling climate change, women empowerment, poverty reduction and other aspects. This week, the United Nations visited the Mosupatsela Secondary School in Krugersdorp, northwest of Johannesburg to give a talk to students about the role and work of the UN in South Africa. The visit was part of the UN4U, a week-long programme commemorated prior to UN Day on October 24.
Health Promotion Officer at the World Health Organization in Pretoria, Eugene Mahlehla gave a presentation to more than 40 History students aged between 16-18 years. He explained the mandate of the UN, its structures and targets in South Africa. He also spoke about South Africa’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions in other African countries. Lastly, Eugene Mahlehla explained the importance of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the recent adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda’s new Strategic Development Goals, SDGs. To mark International Day of Peace the United Nations visited the Curro Roodeplaat High School in Pretoria, where nearly 200 students gathered to listen to messages on the role of the UN in peace-building and development.
The UN Information Centre’s Librarian Hope Kabamba read a global message from the Secretary-General Ban ki Moon, calling for an end to the killing and destruction in various parts of the world.
International Day of Peace is observed annually on 21st September. This year’s theme was “Partnerships for Peace- Dignity for All”. Continue reading

Pretoria, 29 January 2014 – To mark the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of Victims of the Holocaust 2014, UNIC Pretoria co-organised a commemorative event in Johannesburg on 29 January as well as an educational session with students in Orange Farm on 30 January 2014.
UNIC together with the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre and the Ditsong National Museum of Military History hosted a commemorative event for over 180 people, including survivors of the Holocaust and their families and members of the diplomatic community, in Johannesburg at the Museum on 29 January 2014. The keynote speaker Dr. Robert Rozett, Director of the Yad Vashem Libraries, spoke on the destruction of the Hungarian Jewry. Continue reading
