 Girls spend 160 million more hours than boys doing household chores everyday – UNICEF

 PRETORIA, 11 October, 2016 – Girls between 5 and 14 years old spend 40 per cent more time, or 160 million more hours a day, on unpaid household chores and collecting water and firewood compared to boys their age, according to a report released by UNICEF ahead of International Day of the Girl on 11 October.

Later this month, Governments and their partners will meet in Quito, Ecuador, for the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III). Held every 20 years, the Habitat conference is designed to reflect on the state of human settlements and on what we want the towns and cities of the future to look like.

Migration Dynamics, Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons in Africa

africa-2On 19 September the United Nations General Assembly hosted its first ever High-Level Summit to Address Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach to addressing the worst refugee crisis since the end of WWII. The summit provided an historic opportunity to develop a blueprint for a better international response. On the occasion of this meeting, UNAI asked researches at UNAI member institutions to submit articles highlighting their research and its implications in helping to solve this issue. Through this series, UNAI hopes to provide an understanding of refugee/migrant flows to its readers, highlight the importance of addressing refugee and migration flows in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and showcase the work of professors and researchers at UNAI institutions. Every year on the International Day of Peace, the United Nations calls on warring parties to lay down their arms and observe a 24-hour global ceasefire. The symbolism of a day without fighting is a crucial reminder that conflict can and must come to an end.

Students from the Department of Library and information Studies from the University of Limpopo, in South Africa, visited the UNIC Pretoria Library last month to gain a better understanding of the UN in South Africa and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Accompanied by their lecturers, the visit was part of an educational tour of special interest and academic libraries. The tour of UNIC Pretoria Library included informative discussions on work of the UN as well as libraries as resource centres. Continue reading
