United Nations in South Africa marks UN Day

The United Nations in South Africa joined the rest of the world on 24 October 2017 to mark the anniversary of the ratification of the UN Charter. The ratification of the UN Charter took place in 1945 after being endorsement by majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council. This process gave birth to the UN. The 24th October has been celebrated as UN Day since 1948. In 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

The UN Ocean Conference is taking place at UN headquarters in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017, coinciding with World Oceans Day (8 June). Co-chaired by Fiji and Sweden, the Conference aims to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

THE OCEAN CONFERENCE

SDG_Media_Zone_promo_card2The Ocean Conference takes place at UN Headquarters in New York on 5-9 June and will mobilize action by all stakeholders—leaders of governments, the private sector, civil society, academic institutions, the scientific community—to advance the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) which calls for efforts to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.
