I send my warmest wishes to all those celebrating the Day of Vesak in honour of the birth of Lord Buddha. Everyone can draw inspiration from his journey. Born a sheltered prince, Shakyamuni went out into the world to confront and overcome human suffering. As one sutra states, “Because all living beings are subject to illness, I am ill as well.”

In Zimbabwe, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador calls for more protection of child victims of sexual violence

8 May 2017 – Drawing attention to the harrowing traumas of child victims of sexual violence, a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for greater recognition of the fact that it is “not OK” for children to be touched inappropriately as well as for raising awareness among youngsters that under-age sex can lead to pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL – MESSAGE ON WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 3 May 2017

Journalists go to the most dangerous places to give voice to the voiceless.

Media workers suffer character assassination, sexual assault, detention, injuries and even death.

We need leaders to defend a free media. This is crucial to counter prevailing misinformation.

And we need everyone to stand for our right to truth.

On World Press Freedom Day, I call for an end to all crackdowns against journalists – because a free press advances peace and justice for all.

When we protect journalists, their words and pictures can change our world.

UNIC Pretoria hosts a special screening of the Smurfs Movie.

Learners and teachers from Kokosi Primary School after the launch of the Smurfs movie in Johannesburg.

Pretoria – On Sunday the 26th March 2017, UNIC Pretoria in partnerships with UNICEF, Sony Pictures South Africa, Flow Communications and Ster Kinekor hosted a special screening on the Smurfs Movie called “The Lost Village” for learners and teachers of Kokosi Primary School in Johannesburg.
