During his first week in office, in January 2017, the Secretary-General established a diverse High-Level Task Force, led by his Special Coordinator Jane Holl Lute, to develop as a matter of urgency a strategy to achieve visible and measurable improvements in the way the Organisation prevents and responds to sexual exploitation and abuse.

The meeting was well attended with representatives from Office of the Resident Coordinator, International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, UN Women, UNHCR, UNEP and the UN Information Centre (UNIC).

UNIC Pretoria observed International Mother Language Day 21 February

UNIC Pretoria in partnership with the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) through its outreach unit, Centre for the Books in partnership with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Library, City of Tshwane Es’kia Mphahlele Community Library, Gauteng Department of Education and Mzantsi Spelling Bee celebrated International Mother Language Day (IMLD) in a series of events which included an exhibition that was held on the 21 February 2017 at the City of Tshwane Es’kia Mphahlele Community Library, and a celebration on the 25th February, held at the Wynand Marias Hall in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

28 February 2017 – Delivering her first address as the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed underlined that Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are essential for a safe and secure future that brings prosperity, opportunity and human rights for all.

“Around the world, success in achieving the SDGs will ease global anxieties, provide a better life for women and men and build a firm foundation for stability and peace in all societies, everywhere,” said Ms. Mohammed at the opening of the 2017 UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) segment on Operational Activities for Development.
