UNIC Pretoria celebrated UN Day on Monday, 24th October by hosting a Twitter Party at the Rosa Parks Innovation Studio in Soweto, south of Johannesburg. The event, in partnership with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), aimed at bringing learners together in the digital world and affording them the opportunity to interact with Under Secretary-General and Head of the Department of Communication and Public Information at the UN, Ms Cristina Gallach.

Through the #AskCristina, students asked a range of questions regarding reform and the possibility of Africa representation on the Security Council as well as the water crisis facing the SADC region and the issue of climate change.

unday3The buzz was created as some students who had never used Twitter before were guided in setting up their Twitter accounts and encouraged to join the conversation by tweeting. Excitement grew on the faces of the learners as they heard that their question could be seen by the rest of the world and fellow youth by simply tweeting using the ‘#AskCristina’ hash tag.
