The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Pretoria visited Adam Masebe Secondary School in Hammanskraal Pretoria North and addressed the grade 9 learners on the UN and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“As part of inclusive participation without leaving anyone behind”, UNIC Pretoria addressed students by informing and educating them on the importance of the SDG’s as well as to highlight the history and work of the United Nations both nationally and globally.
Students were asked to share their aspirations for the future and to link them to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the SDGs are pertinent to their career paths.
In line with (SDG) 4 “Quality Education” a wide range of SDGs posters, Comic books and pamphlets were donated to ensure that the learners have access to the information they needed to, expand their knowledge, become empowered and educated on the SDGs thereby creating chances to access quality education, accelerate poverty reduction and work towards reducing inequalities within their community.
This was the second meeting between the UN and students following an educational outreach event on the Holocaust with the same students in January. Students were reminded about the concepts learnt during that briefing and were also encouraged to keep abreast of relevant issues highlighted by the UN.
Students were invited to visit the UN House in Pretoria to learn more about the SDGs but also to meet more staff and gain a better understanding on how the UN works to improve the lives of citizens of the globe and how each citizen can be empowered to evoke change.
