The United Nations in South Africa joined the rest of the world on 24 October 2017 to mark the anniversary of the ratification of the UN Charter. The ratification of the UN Charter took place in 1945 after being endorsement by majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council. This process gave birth to the UN. The 24th October has been celebrated as UN Day since 1948. In 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.
